World record holder in the women’s 100m hurdles, Tobi Amuan, might just be settling into the new season with two hurdles events under her belt this season, but her rivals are already coming close to her 12.12s record which she set at the World Championships in 2022, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Amusan hit the track in Keqiao, China on Saturday for her second hurdles event of the season, where she placed fourth with a new season’s best of 12.66s.

The race was won by the USA’s Grace Stark with a time of 12.42s followed by reigning World Champion Danielle Williams in 12.55s while South Africa’s Fourie Marione was third in 12.62s.

Stark and Williams had finished in swapped positions from the Diamond League opener in Xiamen last weekend.

Before Amusan and co filed out in China, Olympic champion, Masai Russell, clocked a new American record and second-fastest time in history to win the women’s 100m hurdles event at the Grand Slam Track in Miramar, Florida, blazing to a time of 12.17s (2.0m/s), just five milliseconds shy off Amusan’s record.

Running against a formidable field of hurdlers, Russell took the race with brilliant form from the start and held on to the finish line to clinch the famous victory over in-form Tia Jones, who also clocked an outstanding new personal best of 12.19s for second, while Ackera Nugent was third in 12.34s.

It is also the first time two women have broken 12.20s in one race, making an exciting watch on what to expect for the rest of the season.

Amusan’s season-opening time last weekend in Xiamen was 12.75s and she is still fourth in the Diamond League standings with five points.

The next Diamond League meeting will be in Doha, Qatar on May 16, but before then, Amusan, who has been listed as part of Nigeria’s women’s 4x100m relay team for the World Relays in Guangzhou, China this month will turn her attention to national team duties.

For other contenders in the Grand Slam Track as well, their next meet is slated for May 30 to June 1 in  Philadelphia.
