Ben Shelton is one of the big prospects for American tennis on the ATP Tour.

Shelton has reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals for the first time in his career this year, using his big serve to his advantage on grass.

The world number 10 will have a step up in opponent for his quarter-final, with Shelton taking on Jannik Sinner.

John McEnroe reveals if he thinks Ben Shelton can win a Grand Slam

Someone who has big hopes for Shelton is John McEnroe, having spent some time together at the Laver Cup last year.

Speaking ahead of his Wimbledon quarter-final with Sinner, McEnroe explained how much it would mean for American tennis for Shelton to win a Grand Slam title.

McEnroe also predicted that Shelton would achieve that goal at some point in his career.

“Tracy knows this because she lives in America and is an American,” McEnroe said on the BBC next to co-pundit Tracy Austin.

“It would be absolutely huge for Shelton with his personality, what he brings to the table for our sport to get over the hump and win one.

“It would be massive for us and get way more people interested in our sport if he can pull it off.

And I think he is going to do it at some point, it’s not going to be easy but it’s doable and he’s got a real shot at this match today.”

Ben Shelton looking to make history for American tennis

American women have had success on the Grand Slam stage already this year, with Madison Keys winning the Australian Open and Coco Gauff triumphing at Roland Garros.

However, it has been a drought in terms of Grand Slam success for American men, with it being nearly 22 years since Andy Roddick won the 2003 US Open.

There have been some close calls since then, most recently with Taylor Fritz reaching the US Open final last year before losing to the aforementioned Sinner.

Fritz remains in the Wimbledon draw this year after booking his place in the semi-finals, and will also be looking to make American tennis history.

Both Shelton and Fritz are looking to become the first American to win a major title in 22 years, and it is even longer since someone from the US won the men’s singles title at Wimbledon.
