OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (KCTV) – A Blue Valley North Mustang rewrote the state record books this weekend at the state meet.

Delia Gregory ran the 400-meter dash in a time of 53.49 seconds, the fastest in KSHSAA history.

Gregory’s time beat the record previously held by Janell Smith, who would go on to compete in the Olympics. Gregory says her record-setting run still has not sunk in.

“It’s surreal. It honestly hasn’t hit me yet,” she told KCTV5 on Monday. “Kansas has a lot of good competition.

It’s so underrated as a track state and I was competing against the best of the best, so that definitely pushed me.”

Entering the state meet, Gregory was dealing with a foot injury and had not run as well as she had wanted to during the regular season.

After the state meet, she left with back-to-back titles in the 400.

“This was a goal I had all season long,” said Gregory.

“There were definitely ups and downs. Meets where I doubted myself and didn’t have the performances that I wanted to.

Practices that weren’t the best was rough, not running as fast as I knew I could, but after running that race, it kind of gave me reassurance.

I was really, really happy with it because the season was definitely tough.”

Gregory wraps up her high school career with eight state track titles and eight different school records.

“Her work ethic is second to none,” said Jacob Schultze, Gregory’s track coach at Blue Valley North. “I can always count on her.

Even though she is definitely our best athlete, she’s an even better person.

She’s a great leader. She’s humble. People really look up to her.”

Next year, Gregory will run track at Princeton in the Ivy League.
