Chelsea’s squad have decided to honour Diogo Jota and his brother by donating a part of their FIFA Club World Cup bonuses to their family.

As a result of the match, the Premier League club were estimated to take home around £85million for winning the competition, which took place across 12 different venues in the United States.

The final took place less than two weeks after the tragic accident that claimed the life of Liverpool star Jota and his brother Andre Silva in Cernadilla, Spain.

In light of this, it has now been revealed that the Chelsea squad have decided to donate some of their Club World Cup bonus winnings to the family of the two brothers in a touching gesture.

As revealed in a report in The Athletic, Chelsea were allocated a $15.5m (£11.4m) bonus fund to be distributed equally between the players who represented the club throughout the Club World Cup.

However, after discussions between club and players, it was decided that an equal payment will also be made to Jota’s family, with the total donation tallies to around $500,000 (£368,184).

During his career, Jota enjoyed a close relationship with Chelsea winger Pedro Neto, who he played with both for Wolverhampton Wanderers and the Portugal national team.

Ahead of Chelsea’s quarter-final win over Palmeiras, which took place just two days after Jota’s death, Neto was seen holding back his tears as he wore a Chelsea shirt emblazoned with the names of the two brothers.

In a tribute posted on Instagram, Neto wrote: “My sweet friend Jota. What a man, what a husband, what a father, what a partner and what a friend..

“Your endearing laugh that made us all laugh non-stop. I learned a lot from you and as you often said, ‘There are no fantasies in the world’.

“You are great and you will always be and that is how we will remember you forever. We will never forget you, watch over us.”

Ahead of the beginning of the 2025/26 season, Liverpool announced plans unveiled plans to build a memorial sculpture at Anfield as a permanent tribute to Jota.

The club also announced that they were permanently retiring the No. 20 shirt at all levels of the club in memory of forward, who scored 65 goals in 182 appearances for the Reds.

Players and fans will observe minute’s silence for Jota and his brother ahead of Liverpool’s match against Bournemouth on Friday, while players Liverpool players will wear a ‘Forever 20’ emblem on their shirts and stadium jackets for the season.
