Coco Gauff is just 21 years old and is already entering her sixth French Open, looking to clinch a second Grand Slam title.

Gauff made the semi-final at Roland Garros last year and had her best campaign in 2022, when she lost in the final to Iga Swiatek.

The former US Open champion is yet to win a major title since her triumph at Flushing Meadows in 2023, but might just have her best chance to do so in Paris this year.

Following an impressive clay swing where Gauff made the final of the Italian Open and the Madrid Open, the American is in fine form on the dirt heading into the second Grand Slam of the season.

With the French Open set to begin on the 25th of May, Gauff has the opportunity to achieve something no other American has in a decade.

Coco Gauff could become the first American player to win Roland Garros since 2015

The last American player to win the French Open singles title was Serena Williams, who emerged victorious at Stade Roland Garros a decade ago, defeating Lucie Safarova in the final to hold the trophy aloft on Philippe Chatrier.

Compatriots Sloane Stephens and Sofia Kenin have since come close, but ultimately failed to get over the line.

All things considered, this year is Gauff’s best opportunity to win her second Grand Slam and end the American dry spell at the French Open.

The defending champion, Swiatek, has struggled to get it going on clay this season and has been dealt a difficult route to the final, meaning an early exit for the Pole could blow the draw wide open.

As the world number two, Gauff enters the tournament as the second seed and has a favourable path to the final.

She also comes into the event having played career-best clay-court tennis in April and May, and looks to be one of the most in-form players in the world on the surface currently.

It won’t be easy, but Gauff certainly looks to be one of the heavy favourites to take the crown from Swiatek.

Coco Gauff’s record at Roland Garros over the years

Gauff made her debut at Roland Garros in 2020, where at just 16 years of age, she made it to the second round of the tournament.

In her next campaign in 2021, she made her first Grand Slam quarter-final, ultimately falling to former Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova.

The next year, Gauff had her best run to date, where she tore through her half of the draw without dropping a set, before meeting Swiatek in the final, where she was handed a straight-sets defeat.

Since then, she made the quarter-final in 2023 and the semi-final last year, where Swiatek once again got the better of her.
