Edu Gaspar resigned from his role as Arsenal’s sporting director in November 2024.

The Brazilian spent over five years at the Emirates Stadium, and he deserves a lot of credit for the work he did during his time at the club.

Edu was the one who started the current Arsenal project under Mikel Arteta, and he is among the reasons why the Gunners are challenging for the big trophies now.

Just over a month ago, in April, Edu bid farewell to Arsenal fans after completing his gardening leave following his resignation in November.

Now, the Gunners are about to make some money from a deal Edu pulled off before he left.

Nuno Tavares joined Arsenal from Benfica in the summer of 2021.

The Portuguese full-back was viewed as a big talent at the time, and he produced a few excellent performances in his first few months at the club.

However, following the turn of 2022, Tavares’ form and confidence fell off a cliff, and he has been sent out on loan three times since.

His current spell at Lazio has definitely been his most successful loan move so far.

He has been so good there that club president Claudio Lotito has claimed that he wouldn’t sell Tavares even for £58 million.

That suggests that Edu Gaspar may have made a mistake including an obligation-to-buy clause for a small fee in his loan deal.

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Lazio will pay £7.5 million now to make Tavares’ move permanent once his loan spell ends.

The journalist tweeted: “Arsenal will receive €9 million (£7.5m) fee from Lazio for Nuno Tavares as part of loan with obligation to buy clause. AFC will also maintain a sell-on clause.”

Nuno Tavares showed a lot of promise when he first joined Arsenal.

The defender was really impressive in the first half of his loan spell at Marseille too, but consistency has been his biggest issue so far.

At Lazio, after joining them on loan from Arsenal, Tavares has picked up nine assists in 28 appearances in all competitions.

Eight of those came in his first eight Serie A appearances for the Italian side.

Tavares will do well at Lazio once they sign him permanently next season, but if he wants to be regarded as one of the best, he will have to be consistent throughout the season.
