Millions Beatrice Chebet Minted in 30 Minutes of Historic Gold Medal Win in Tokyo

Newly-crowned world 10,000m champion Beatrice Chebet is set to be rewarded handsomely by World Athletics and the Kenyan government for winning gold in Tokyo.
Beatrice Chebet became the first Kenyan athlete to claim the millions on offer at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan.
Chebet stormed to the 10,000m gold over the distance to end Kenya’s 10-year wait for the crown last won by Vivian Cheruiyot in 2015.
As expected, Chebet executed a tactical race to keep pace with defending champion Gudaf Tsegay, compatriot Agnes Jebet Ngetich as well as Italian Nadia Battocletti.

However, in the final lap, Chebet outpaced Tsegay to win gold in a time of 30:37.61 with Battocletti claiming silver, having clocked 30:38.23, as the Ethiopian settled for bronze in 30:39.65.
Kenyan Ace Claimed Her First World Title
Beatrice Chebet won 10,000m gold in Tokyo.
That saw the 25-year-old win her first-ever world title, adding to the gold medals she won at the Paris 2024 Olympics in both 5,000m and 10,000m as well as silver and bronze, both in 5,000m, at the 2022 and 2023 World Championships.
Chebet is therefore assured millions thanks to a bumper prize money set aside by World Athletics not just for gold medalists in Tokyo but for the top eight as well as a mouth-watering bonus for any athlete that breaks a world record.
At the 2025 World Championships, a god medal is attracting a prize of $70,000 (Ksh9 million), silver $35,000 (Ksh4.5 million) and bronze $22,000 (Ksh2.8 million).
How Much is Chebet Assured in Prize Money?

There are also prizes ranging from $16,000 (Ksh2 million), $11,000 (Ksh1.4 million), $7,000 (Ksh904,000), $6,000 (Ksh775,350) and $5,000 (Ksh646,123) for athletes who finish in fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth places respectively.
It means Chebet minted Ksh9 million in just over 30 minutes in Tokyo, a good return for her hard work, and she has a chance to make it Ksh18 million from Tokyo if she manages to win the 5,000m gold as well.
Besides the World Athletics prize, Chebet is also assured an extra Ksh3 million from the Kenyan government which is the reward for every gold medal winner, meaning she has pocketed Ksh12 million for her heroics in the 10,000m race, and could take it up to Ksh24 million with a 5,000m gold.
