High school athletes from across Kansas came to Wichita to compete in the state track and field meet on May 30 and 31.

Some achieved new personal times, others snapped state meet records. Here is a snapshot of some of their achievements. By Taylor Eldridge and Travis Heying

It was a bad weekend to be a record at the Kansas high school state track and field meet this past weekend.

More than 40 state-meet records fell over the course of the 2-day event with all six classifications and both genders competing for championships and medals at University Stadium on Wichita State’s campus.

Athletes capitalized on ideal weather conditions to break a total of 41 state-meet records, by the count of The Eagle.

Nearly half of those records came in the open short sprints, as the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash and 400-meter dash saw a combined 18 records fall.

Four more were broken in distance races, two in the hurdles, 12 across three relays and five were broken in field events.

Of those 41 record-breaking performances, a handful managed to also etch their name in the state history books with top-5 times in Kansas history — regardless if it happened at the state meet or not.

• Blue Valley North senior Delia Gregory set the Kansas state record in the 400 to win the 6A title in 53.49.

• Manhattan’s 400 girls relay team of Sarah Oberreuter, Hanna Pellant, Michelle Jeje and Harli Omli broke their own state record set last season by more than a tenth of a second to repeat as 6A champions with a time of 46.73.

• Washburn Rural’s 1600 boys relay team of Matthew Houser, Liam Morrison, Draden Chooncharoen and Isaiah Terry ran the fastest time in Kansas history to win the 6A title in 3:16.23. The previous best was 3:17.07 by Olathe East in 2014.

• Maize senior Alan Hanna moved up to No. 2 all time in Kansas history to win the 6A title with a career-best jump of 7-3.5 in the high jump, an inch off the state record.

• Olathe West’s 400 boys relay team of Brayden Johnson, Bryce Austin, Caden Richardson and Tevyn Gasaway recorded the second-fastest time in Kansas history to win the 6A title in 41.49.

• St. James’ 3200 boys relay team of Max Brown, Michael Bianco, Brock Wondra and Noah Schowengerdt logged the third-fastest time in Kansas history to win the 5A title in 7:45.21.

• Manhattan senior Harli Omli moved up to a tie for the fifth-fastest time in Kansas history in the 100 to win the 6A title in 11.58.

• Kapaun Mt. Carmel junior Daniel Enriquez moved up to No. 5 all time in Kansas history with his career-best time of 4:06.58 in the 1600 to win the 5A title.

• Holcomb’s 3200 boys relay team of Jeb Stoppel, Weston Baker, Landen Leonard and Brody Deniston recorded the fourth-fastest time in Kansas history to win the 3A title in 7:47.42.

• Wichita Collegiate sophomore Timmy Ritchie recorded the fifth-fastest 400 time in Kansas history, winning the 3A title with a meet-record time of 47.00.

There were also eight other performances that broke a previous meet record, but did not win a state title.
