Nigeria’s Discus queen Obiageri Amaechi

African Games champion Obiageri Amaechi punched her ticket to the World Championships in Tokyo next month, throwing a massive PB in Ramona.

Nigerian Discus queen Obiageri Amaechi will be on the plane to Tokyo after hitting the World Championships qualifying standard with the second-best mark by an African woman in history.

At the Oklahoma Throws Series in Ramona on Sunday, the 26-year-old talented thrower nailed a massive Personal Best (PB) of 64.80m to win the women’s Discus Throw event.

With her mark, Amaechi smashed her PB by almost 2 meters and surpassed the world championships qualifier mark of 64.50m.

She also becomes the second-best African thrower in history, behind compatriot Chioma Onyekwere-Lyons’ African Record of 64.96m.

Amaechi’s consistency this season has finally been rewarded, having shown up at different meets aiming to hit the Tokyo qualifying standard.

Her international resume is highlighted by being the 2022 Commonwealth bronze medallist, 2022 African Championships bronze medallist, 2023 African Games champion, and 2024 African Championships silver medallist.
