Jaden Philogene became the 13th player to score a hat-trick for Ipswich Town this century in last Friday night’s 5-0 demolition of Sheffield United. Stuart Watson looks back on the other 12.

£20m winger has really enhanced his reputation following a difficult first eight months the club.

Each goal was better than the last. Rifled into the bottom corner to break the deadlock, slammed a fine reverse finish in from the edge of the box and then thumped a left-footed shot into the top corner after some sharp stepovers to claim the match ball.

Having bagged six braces in the League One promotion-winning campaign of 2022/23, the fans’ favourite finally got a hat-trick as Charlton were put to the sword.

The first was a low, left-footed finish at the end of a well-worked team move.

The second was a high, right-footed finish after he’d been involved in the earlier build-up.

The match ball was claimed with a close-range tap-in.

“He got the third before I could take him off today!” joked Kieran McKenna afterwards.

Welsh midfielder, a deep-lying playmaker, was an unlikely hat-trick hero on a night where Paul Cook’s new-look team showed their potential.

First was converted at the back post following a corner, second was a header, while the third, a driven finish, was the pick of the bunch. It was celebrated with a perfectly-executed knee slide.

“To be fair, my little girl told me I was going to score tonight,” he revealed afterwards.

“I was 14/15 the last time I got a hat-trick. This means a lot to me.”

Scored a hat-trick on his debut… after coming on as a half-time substitute!

Having arrived in a £600k summer signing from Tottenham just a few days earlier, the speedy right-winger replaced Teddy Bishop at the break and took just 39 seconds to open his Blues account when arriving late in the box to score with his first touch.

A deflected finish into the top corner and left-footed daisy-cutter followed.

“I think I had three shots and three goals!” he said.

“Hopefully I can add more goals to my game.” Only scored five more times in 97 further appearances for the club.

Having scored 27 times in 2014/15, Murphy endured a goal drought at the start of the next season.

He ended a 14-game wait to find the net in style at the New York Stadium though, with boss McCarthy claiming an assist for the third!

When a Rotherham fan threw the ball back on the field, it inadvertently hit the Blues boss square on the back of the head to loud cheers.

Town took the throw-in, worked the ball inside and Murphy lashed an emphatic low shot into the bottom corner.

The Irishman went on to join Newcastle for £3m the following summer.

There was already a fair amount of hype surrounding the 17-year-old academy graduate before he netted this hat-trick and was subsequently named Championship Player of the Month.

The powerful teenager joined Premier League club Sunderland for £8m later that year, but injuries blighted a career that never saw him fulfil his huge potential.

Forward celebrated a call-up to the Republic of Ireland B squad with a fine hat-trick that made it seven straight home wins for Jim Magilton’s men at the start of the 2007/08 season.

Walters enjoyed three-and-a-half seasons with Town before becoming a Premier League stalwart for Stoke City and racking up 54 senior international caps.

A trio of goals, the third of which came from the spot, were scored in a 24-minute spell right at the end of the game.

The in-form Irish striker also contributed an assist that day for an inconsistent Town side that would go on to finish 14th in the Championship.

The 17-year-old academy graduate enjoyed a very memorable full home debut for the Blues.

Hornets keeper Lenny Pidgeley gifted him his first, Darren Bent’s pinpoint cross created his second, while he took advantage of some hesitant defending for his third.

Remains the youngest hat-trick scorer in Ipswich history (17 years, 9 months, 5 days).

Homegrown striker, 20 at the time, bagged a second half hat-trick to inject some life back into a faltering promotion push.

After netting 56 goals for the Blues, he went on to be a Premier League star for the likes of Charlton, Tottenham, Sunderland and Aston Villa, also featuring 13 times for England.

A close-range tap-in from Jamie Clapham’s low cross, deft header following fine work by Hermann Hreidarsson and cheeky dinked penalty, after Matt Holland had been knocked over in the box, saw Stewart claim a Premier League match ball.

The talismanic front man would end the campaign with 19 top-flight goals, with George Burley’s newly-promoted men qualifying for Europe via an unlikely fifth-place finish.

May 17, 2000: 5-3 v Bolton Wanderers (H)

Magilton only scored 16 goals for the Blues over a seven-and-a-half year spell, but three of them came in one of the most iconic nights in the club’s modern history.

The Northern Irishman scored a penalty, saw another saved, beat two defenders to slam home his second, then netted a sensational last-gasp volley to take a breathless encounter to extra-time.

Town, of course, went on to win the match and also the subsequent final at Wembley.
