After missing out on a trip to Tokyo for the 2025 World Athletics Championships, U.S. Olympic 1,500m bronze medallist Yared Nuguse found redemption on Sunday on the streets of New York City, clocking 3:47.7 in his New Balance 5th Avenue Mile debut to win over a stacked field.

The lead switched repeatedly in the final, with Nuguse, Hobbs Kessler, Josh Hoey, Parker Wolfe and Nick Griggs all taking turns at the front.

In the end, with one final surge, Nuguse out-kicked fellow American Wolfe, also making his debut, who took second in 3:48.1, while Drew Hunter ran 3:48.4 for third.

“I love the energy, there were so many people throughout the entire course,” Nuguse told media post-race.

“I felt [that push] when Parker came on my side, around 200m to 100m to go–at that point, I was like ‘we have to do it now, this is it, this is the move.’”

Less than two weeks ago at the Zürich Diamond League final, Nuguse was vying for the win and a World Championships wild card in the men’s 1,500m. He ultimately placed seventh, concluding his 2025 track campaign.

Last year winner was Olympic 1,500m silver medallist Josh Kerr of the U.K., who set a blistering event record of 3:44.3.

Kerr was absent this year while preparing to defend his world title in Tokyo next week.

Defending champ Karissa Schweizer takes third

On the women’s side, Gracie Morris continued her breakout season with a perfectly-executed sit-and-kick.

Defending champion Karissa Schweizer, who matched the course record of 4:14.8 last year,  led for the first three-quarters of the race, before Morris surged to a dominant two-second win, clocking 4:15.5 and upgrading from her fifth-place finish last year.

Kayley Delay claimed second in 4:17.4, with Schweizer fading to take third in 4:17.6.
